Counselling Service

Counselling Service

I provide counselling for adults and children. Issues range from depression, anxiety, bereavement, loss, separation, abuse, trauma, PTSD, self-esteem and relationship issues. IACP and MBACP accredited, I use an integrative approach in my practice; however, my core approach is person-centred.

I help my clients explore their present situation using a person-centred model. After hearing the client’s presenting issues in the present, I then explore their present view of the past using psychodynamic theories. The client looks at how their past experiences may have impacted their current situation. This can be done by exploring theories such as Bowlby’s Attachment theory which highlights the long-term effects and impact that attachment styles can have on a child’s development into adult life. In addition, clients can explore their background, culture, community and environment they grew up in further. In doing so the client may identify positive or negative values and beliefs they developed in their childhood about themselves. By reflecting on this from the present perspective a client may increase their self-awareness, identify negative thought patterns, release painful emotions

and develop a new perspective as to how these issues may impact their current situation.  Through working with a client on their past they gain insights and increase their self-awareness in the present. This helps the client move on to the final stage of exploring their future in the present. Solutions Focused model can help a client change their perspective on an issue from impossible to possible. The shift in mindset helps the client identify actions and motivate them to make changes. Clients can develop a new perspective on an issue, look at the issue from a solutions mindset and feel motivated to identify actions and goals to work towards a solution.

CBT is used as required when working with some clients, it can help identify barriers, challenge fears and develop strategies to manage anxious situations.

Children Counselling

Children and young people do not always have the language to describe the issues that are causing them distress.

When working with children and young people I incorporate a variety of different mediums such as art, crafts, play and using the sand tray, can help the child get in touch with their difficult thoughts and feelings.

The art or play becomes the language and gives the child the medium to tell their story using their language.

What is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages a client to briefly focus on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms.
